Jack has become extremely jealous of Ralph being chief. When
they are climbing the mountain Ralph makes the decision to go up alone/first
but Jack follows him out of what I believe is jealousy. He wants to be the one
who takes the first step. When Ralph realizes how foolish it was to climb the
mountain, he expresses it freely and isn’t afraid to seem wrong or worried. Jack however
cannot look weak and therefore mocks Ralph for his “cowardice”. Ralph realizes
that Jack really isn’t the friend he though he had and that he is somehow
jealous of him no matter who he is.
This sort of foreshadows something to me. I think the two boys' friendship is declining in strength and is eventually going to disappear completely. This could lead to a ton of new problems on the island and could even put Ralph and Piggy and all the other boys on the "good side" in possible danger. The boys need a leader but if they don't listen to the leader and all they care about is having fun, then Jack might become too powerful in the future and bad things could happen to Ralph and the boys who trust him.
