Chapter 8... it finally happened. Ralph and Jack are no longer friends. They have split the boys of the island in half and now who knows what could happen. The whole split is bit messy and leaves bad feelings among the boys.
Ralph finally speaks his mind and tells Jack just how
immature he is. He still is a bit jealous of the adventure Jack is having, but
the fact that his “games” of hunting ruined Ralph’s chances of getting home
made Ralph lose almost all respect for him. Therefore when Jack suggests the help of his hunters, Ralph just mocks him and his efforts. Jack then takes what has always been Ralph's source of power, the conch, and claims it almost as his own. He takes over the authority and calls the boys to his own meeting. At first the boys are skeptical, but only because they are frightened and ashamed to tell Ralph that they would leave to join Jack. All the boys are looking for fun, and Jack promises that. They don't even have the dignity to tell Ralph their decisions. They sneak off to be with Jack when no one is paying them any attention, and create a harsh break between the two sides.
